What is it?
Bowen therapy is unlike anything else when it comes to gentleness, effectiveness and quick but long lasting results.
Bowen is a remedial therapy suitable for adults, children, newborn babies and the elderly that consists of a series of precisely placed moves which roll over soft tissue. No force is applied. What makes the therapy so unique is the periods of rest inbetween the moves. This rest period is vital to allow the body to start working with and adjusting to the moves that have been performed by the therapist.
What is Invoved?
An appointment lasts between 30 and 60 minutes. Most of the moves can be carried out through light clothing or directly on the skin. Generally 4 to 5 sessions will be sufficient to provide lasting relief, although further treatment may be required.
What does it treat?
The Bowen Technique can provide relief for (but is not limited to) the following conditions:
- Back and neck pain
- Sports injuries
- Tennis elbow
- Knee problems
- Repetitive Strain Injury
- Joint pain
- Hayfever and asthma
- Irritable Bowel Syndrome
- Frozen shoulder
- Bunions
- Chronic fatigue
- Headache and migraine
- Arthritis
- Stress management
- Pre menstrual tension
How is Bowen different from other forms of therapy such as chiropractic or osteopathy?
Chiropractors and Osteopaths generally use force to realign the structure of the body. Bowen is much more gentle and works on the soft tissues as opposed to bone. Bowen is not, however, like massage.
Who Invented Bowen?
Thomas Ambrose Bowen of Geelong, Australia developed the technique and had a thriving practice until his death in the 1980s. His technique is now practiced by thousands worldwide.
